hear tHe tales from the zoo!African and Indigenous Australian storytelling comes to life at Werribee Open Range Zoo these school holidays with a new 16-day event. Roving performers will use song, dance and ceremony to tell a range of animal-related and culturally- inspired stories at Zoo Tales, a free* festival of stories that includes immersive activities such as African stone carving, Indigenous Australian straw animal making and traditional face painting. Visitors of all ages will have the chance to explore two distinct cultural backgrounds. The first week will focus on a variety of African cultures, while the second will highlight Indigenous Australian culture from the Kulin nation. Watch zebra performers, hear the tale of how the lion got its roar and enjoy an Ethiopian coffee ceremony with our African storytellers in week one. Return to cook damper, make clapsticks and see Indigenous Australian dance performances in week two. All this while getting up close with rhinos and giraffes on our safari tour, or visiting the kangaroos and emus on our recently improved Australian Journey walk. The knowledgeable keepers will be getting on board with the immersive theme, sharing their amazing animal tales during the keeper talks that happen throughout the zoo every day.
