COPYRIGHT DREAMWORKS THEATRICAL LIMITED 2018. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED © 2019 SHREK THE MUSICAL Charlie And The Chocolate Factory has to be one of Roald Dahl’s best known creations and one that has stood the test of time. Written over 50 years ago this new stage musical adaptation shows that the story has lost none of its magical charm of hope and dreams. With Golden tickets in hand, we stepped inside the factory walls of Wonka on the Opening night of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at Her Majesty’s Theatre Melbourne. After premiering in Sydney, this delectable treat is full of our favourite songs from the original film, including Pure Imagination, The Candy Man and I've Got a Golden Ticket, alongside a brand new, toe-tapping and ear-tickling new score. The talented cast take the audience on a magical journey and for me a journey back to my childhood. The show stays true to the classic storyline following Melbourne’s talented actors Benjamin Belsey (10 years of age, Elijah Slavinskis (10), Edgar Stirling (10), Lenny Thomas (12) and Lachlan Young (13) as our favourite character Charlie Bucket, who lives with his loving mother and four ageing grandparents in a tiny rundown wooden house. Charlie dreams up magical machines that will improve their lives while waiting patiently for his yearly birthday treat, a single bar of Wonka’s Whipple Scrumptious Marshmallow Delight. Meanwhile, Mr Wonka played by the charismatic Paul Slade Smith is putting out a worldwide search for five lucky children who will find a Golden ticket to win a prized tour of his factory, with one grand prize winner receiving a lifetime supply of chocolate! The highlight for us was the second half of the show when we see the famous Oompa Loompas for the first time, without spoiling too much, they had everyone in the audience clapping and laughing with their clever costume designs and dancing. This is a show that has no age barriers, young and old will be captivated by the performance. For those wanting to take little ones along to experience the show, I recommend the matinee session as the evening session finishes quite late into the evening. If you loved the popular book from Roald Dahl, then we agree you'll love the stage musical. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is currently playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre and we recommend you bring the whole family and rediscover the story of Charlie Bucket and Wonka in this fantastic not to be missed musical treat here in Melbourne.
